Sophie Spinelle is a conceptual photographer whose practice explores glamour as a performative and queer mode of world-making. Working in close collaboration with her subjects, she approaches portraiture as a shared act of staging and self-fashioning, where identity is not simply represented but actively produced. Her images draw attention to the theatrical and ritual dimensions of visibility, creating spaces where participants can inhabit forms of beauty, power, and vulnerability often denied within dominant visual culture.
Spinelle has a BA in Painting and Philosophy from Sarah Lawrence College, and turned her full time focus to photography in 2009. Spinelle is a gallery artist with Imperfecta Gallery, in Portland, Oregon. Her photographs have been exhibited widely in the United States and Europe, and published in The New York Times, People, and SFMoMA on the Go.
