Sophie Spinelle is a conceptual photographer whose portraits examine shame, self-invention, and the emotional labor of being seen. Spinelle received a BA in painting and philosophy at Sarah Lawrence College. Represented by Imperfecta Gallery in Portland, OR, Spinelle has exhibited at the International Center of Photography (New York, NY), Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (San Francisco, CA), Center of International Contemporary Art (Vancouver, BC), and Bastille Design Center (Paris, France). She is the recipient of the Curve Foundation Photo Award, and her work has appeared in SFMOMA on the Go, ArtDoc Magazine, The Body Is Not an Apology, and The New York Times.
